Is water enough to clean the baby?
The opinion of Prof Michael Cork, Head of the Department of Dermatology and Biomedical Sciences,The University of Sheffield, the UK At the Pediatric Excellence Congress organized by the European Pediatric AssociationWater alone cannot be an effective cleaner. Water will be insufficient to remove harmful bacteria, especially in the diaper area. Additionally, using only water in cleaning the babies may have a negative effect on the baby's skin. Because, the use of only water moistens the baby skin for a short period, for about 30 seconds, then dries the skin. The pH of a healthy baby skin is 5.5, however since the pH of water is 7.5, water alone increases the pH level of the baby skin and causes the baby's skin barrier to deteriorate. Although some soaps and cleansers can raise the skin pH up to 9-10, therefore damaging the skin. The layer protecting the skin breaks and becomes susceptible to inflammation. Therefore, the right products suitable for the skin pH of the baby should be preferred when choosing the appropriate cleaner for your baby. It is best to use baby products that moisturize the skin while cleaning.
