What are the methods of preventing diaper region dermatitis?
Prevention, Treatment and Parent Education for Diaper Dermatitis1. Nurs Womens Health. 2015 Aug-Sep;19(4):324-36; quiz 337. doi: 10.1111/1751-486X.12218The diaper region and other regions are the same at birth, but after the first 14 days, the pH of the diaper region increases and the hydration increases. The pH change in the skin affects the degree of ionization of molecules and dermal absorption.
The following ABCDE approach can be applied to prevent diaper dermatitis;
A (air), B (barrier), C (cleansing), D (diaper), E (education).
A: Make sure that the diaper area is in as much contact with air as possible.
B: Create a protective oil layer against irritants such as urea and stool using barrier creams containing zinc oxide and make the skin repairs itself under the cream.
C: Gently clean the diaper region with water and a soft cloth or handkerchief at every diaper change, do not rub the skin firmly.
D: Use superabsorbent diapers, avoid cloth diapers. Change the diaper as soon as it gets dirty and at least once in 1-3 hours during the day and at least once during the night.
E: Educate families on diaper region hygiene and good practices on the skin.
