What can be done to prevent atopic dermatitis in children?
Treatment of childhood atopic dermatitis and economic burden of illness in Asia Pacific countriesAnn Nutr Metab. 2015;66 Suppl 1:18-24. doi: 10.1159/000370221. Epub 2015 Apr 24.The atopic dermatitis is a common chronic anti-inflammatory skin problem in children. Moisturizing the skin and emollient application is required for the skin barrier to function. The atopic dermatitis is a chronic infection. Although not fully understood, the atopic dermatitis is thought to be caused by the deficiencies in skin barrier functions, immune abnormalities, and infections. It is also thought that there is a hyperreactive immune response as a result of damage in the epidermal barrier. The damaged epidermal barrier allows the allergens to penetrate through the skin and allows these allergens to accelerate with the local antigen-producing cells and immune cells. The treatment of skin infections (especially related to S.aureus and Herpes Simplex virus) is an important part of the control of exacerbation of eczema. Bathing and then applying moisturizer helps the hydration of the skin and reduces itching. However, there is debate over the frequency and duration of bathing in patients with the atopic dermatitis S. aureus is greatly superior in the exacerbation of atopic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis symptoms worsen.
