Dry skin is associated with skin barrier damage and reduction of epidermal proteins and lipids. When the skin barrier is damaged Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) increases and skin dries. Apart from proteins, epidermal lipids also have an important role in the barrier function of the stratum corneum. The hydrophobic extracellular lipid structure of the stratum corneum consists of ceramide, cholesterol and free fatty acids. These form a physical and antimicrobial barrier. Additionally, the skin pH has an important role in the epidermal barrier formation and antimicrobial defense of the skin.
