Skin cleansing products contain surfactants which remove dirt by rinsing. Since these surfactants will emulsify the lipids, they can damage the stratum corneum lipids and increase the permeability of the skin, therefore causing irritation of the skin. There is evidence that the bathing with liquid cleaners is better than with bathing with water alone. Using liquid products containing a very low irritant surfactant in the bathroom, using these in a small amount and rinsing thoroughly and pot giving babies a bath very frequently are recommended for babies.
