What are the properties the baby moisturizers should have?
Moisturizers for Acne: What are their ConstituentsJ Clin Aesthet Dermatol. 2014 May;7(5):36-44.Moisturizers have three main features: concealer, humectant, and softener. Aloe vera gel and Witch hazel are the herbal anti-inflammatories in this study. Dryness and skin irritation disrupt the barrier structure in the stratum corneum and transepidermal water loss decreases, therefore causing inflammation. Concealer ingredients physically form a hydrophobic film layer on the skin surface, therefore blocking TEWL. For example beeswax, Caprylic/capric triglycerides are concealer. Humectants such as glycerin draw water from the dermis to the epidermis. Additionally, the softeners such as decyl oleate and fatty acids function by filling in the gaps in the skin. Glycerin is the most effective humectant that increases hydration from the stratum corneum. Aloe vera and Chamomilla are also plants with anti-inflammatory properties. Aloe vera and Witch hazel also contain properties of soothing the skin. Scientific data support the anti-inflammatory and wound-repairing properties of zinc.
